GI (Gastrointestinal) Bleed Embolization

GI Bleed Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure used to control internal bleeding within the gastrointestinal tract. It is performed by an Interventional Radiologist using advanced imaging guidance to locate the bleeding artery and seal it safely—without the need for open surgery. It is highly effective in managing life-threatening bleeding and is often used when endoscopy fails or is not possible.

What is a GI Bleed?

A gastrointestinal bleed refers to blood loss occurring anywhere along the digestive tract, including:

  • Esophagus

  • Stomach

  • Small intestine

  • Large intestine (colon)

  • Rectum

It may present as vomiting blood, black stools, or rectal bleeding and may cause dizziness, weakness, or shock.

Common Causes of GI Bleeding

GI bleeding can occur due to several reasons, including:

  • Peptic ulcers

  • Gastric or duodenal ulcers

  • Diverticular disease

  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

  • Tumors (benign or malignant)

  • Angiodysplasia

  • Trauma

  • Varices

  • Surgical complications

When is GI Bleed Embolization Needed?

Your doctor may recommend embolization when:

  • Endoscopy fails to stop the bleeding

  • The patient is unstable for surgery

  • The bleeding source is deep or hard to reach

  • Recurrent or unexplained GI bleeding occurs

It offers a safer alternative for high-risk patients or those unable to undergo major surgery.

How the Procedure Works

GI Bleed Embolization is performed in a Cath Lab or Interventional Radiology suite.

Step-by-step process

  1. Local anesthesia and mild sedation

  2. A small incision in the groin or wrist

  3. Catheter inserted into the artery

  4. Imaging (angiography) used to locate the bleeding vessel

  5. Embolic material (coils, particles, glue) used to block bleeding

  6. Catheter removed and bandage applied

The entire procedure typically takes 1–2 hours.

Benefits of GI Bleed Embolization

  • Minimally invasive

  • No open surgery

  • Quick bleeding control

  • Can treat deep or complex bleeding sites

  • Reduces need for blood transfusion

  • Faster recovery

  • Lower complication rate

Success Rate

GI Bleed Embolization has a high success rate, often between 80–95%, depending on the underlying cause and patient condition.

Recovery & Hospital Stay

Most patients:

  • Stay 1–2 days in hospital

  • Resume normal diet within 24 hours

  • Experience minimal pain

  • Return home quickly

Follow-up may include endoscopy or imaging depending on the cause.

Risks & Complications

While generally safe, potential risks include:

  • Mild bruising at catheter site

  • Temporary abdominal pain

  • Rare re-bleeding

  • Infarction of small bowel tissue (very rare)

  • Allergic reaction to contrast dye (rare)

Your doctor evaluates risks carefully before the procedure.

Who Performs GI Bleed Embolization?

A Consultant Interventional Radiologist—a specialist trained in image-guided minimally invasive procedures.

Why Choose Embolization?

GI Bleed Embolization is often the first-line treatment when:

  • Endoscopy is insufficient

  • Surgery carries high risks

  • Rapid bleeding control is required

It preserves healthy tissue and avoids major surgical trauma.

Emergency & Critical Care Use

The procedure is lifesaving in emergencies such as:

  • Massive GI hemorrhage

  • Shock due to blood loss

  • Bleeding tumors

Patient Instructions

Before the Procedure:

  • Fasting recommended

  • Inform doctor of medications, allergies, kidney function

  • Stop blood thinners as advised

After the Procedure:

  • Bed rest for a few hours

  • Hydration encouraged

  • Avoid heavy lifting for 48–72 hours
