Venous Angioplasty and Stenting

Venous angioplasty and stenting is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure used to open narrowed or blocked veins and restore normal blood flow. It is commonly performed by an Interventional Radiologist using X-ray guidance (fluoroscopy).

Conditions Treated

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) with residual venous narrowing

  • Post-thrombotic syndrome (chronic leg swelling, pain, skin changes)

  • Iliac vein compression (May-Thurner syndrome)

  • Central venous stenosis/occlusion (often in dialysis patients)

  • IVC or pelvic venous obstruction

  • Chronic venous insufficiency with significant obstruction

How the Procedure is Performed

  1. Venous access (usually via femoral or jugular vein) under local anesthesia

  2. Venography to map the blockage

  3. Balloon angioplasty to widen the narrowed segment

  4. Stent placement to keep the vein permanently open

  5. Final imaging to confirm restored blood flow

Most procedures take 1–2 hours and do not require general anesthesia.

Risks & Complications (Uncommon)

  • Medications: Anticoagulants/antiplatelets as prescribed

  • Activity: Light activity in 24–48 hours

  • Follow-up: Duplex ultrasound / venography as advised
